Simon Recreation Center (SLU)

Hey everyone! I’m Nate Ross, a rising senior at Saint Louis University, and I want to share a unique experience that turned into one of the most surprising and rewarding parts of my life this year. It all started when I accidentally got added to a Sunday league basketball team from Minnesota. At first, I was ready to leave the group chat immediately—after all, I didn’t know anyone, and it was a bit of a random situation. But then something caught my attention that changed everything.

The Unexpected Twist

Every Saturday, the group hosted a guided meditation call. Yes, you read that right! A bunch of guys who spent the week trash-talking about jump shots and basketball skills were coming together to sit in silence and meditate. I couldn’t help but find it hilarious. Out of sheer curiosity and a desire for a good laugh, I decided to join the meditation call just to see what it was all about.

A Surprising Routine

To my surprise, I found myself coming back week after week. What started as a joke turned into something much more meaningful. During a particularly tough stretch in my life, that ten-minute meditation call became the steadiest part of my week. It was a moment of calm and connection, held by people I had never met, in a state I had never been to.

Gratitude for the Unlikely

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for that random group chat. It taught me that sometimes, the most unexpected situations can lead to significant personal growth and connection. I learned the value of mindfulness and how a simple act of sitting in silence can bring people together, even if they are miles apart.

So, if you ever find yourself in a strange situation—whether it’s a random group chat or an unexpected team—don’t be too quick to leave. You never know what you might discover or how it might change your perspective. Here’s to finding joy and connection in the most unlikely places!
